Freelance writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner just revealed her huge pay rate

Freelance writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner just revealed her huge pay rateFreelance writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner just revealed her huge pay rateFreelance writings a tough gig, and very few make it to the top. Writing articles is piecework writers are notlage employees of the publications they write for, nor do they typically receive insurance. Hence, the importance of their per-word rate. Most successful freelancers earn $1/word. Writers who make it into the glossy magazines make $2 per word, but seldom do you hear of rates above that except, one assumes, for superstars like Michael Lewis, author of Moneyball and The Big Short and a writer for Vanity Fair. But still, hes not telling how much hes paid.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThats why media mavens and writers were in a tizzy this weekend afterCosmopolitan published its profile of freelancer and journalist extraordinaire Taff y Brodesser-Akner. In the profile, where Brodesser-Akner promoted her new novel and dished on her philosophy about writing about celebrities, she also revealed her jaw-dropping rate $4 a word.Brodesser-Akner has carved out a niche in the celebrity profile sector (although she does other types of features, as well), writing about everyone from actresses Melissa McCarthy and Gwyneth Paltrow to tidying-up queen Marie Kondo for The New York Times magazine (and formerly GQ). One could fairly say she has elevated the form of the celeb profile, as she did with hilarity (and virality) in a recent Times magazine article about Gwyneth Paltrow and the wohlbefinden industryGoops ethic welches this, she paraphrased Paltrow explaining to a class of Harvard Business School students. That having beautiful things sometimes costs money finding beautiful things was sometimes a result of an immense privilege, but a lack of that privilege didnt mean you shouldnt have those things. Besides, just because some people cannot afford it doesnt mean that no one can and that no one should want it. If this bothered anyone, well, the newsletter content was free, and so were the recipes for turkey rag and banana-nut muffins.Starting your own clubHowever, plum assignments like this almost didnt happen. Early in her career, a womens magazine rejected Brodesser-Akner during an interview, saying, Youre not the person we would hire for our story, as she told Cosmopolitan. She sat alone in the buildings cafeteria, and then emailed the editor of GQ, a magazine she admired. Soon, she was working for the publication. However, she soon found herself feeling left out in the boys club atmosphere, as the guys got the freedom to file their stories late and she realized she would never be the writer assigned to sleep on tour buses with bands or camp in the desert with an actor or do ayahuasca with a politician. But as her profile at the magazine grew, she decided that shed had enough. She knew her worth and she had the chops to back it up.When I started doing the I dont get out of bed for less than $4 a word thing, people started paying me $4 a word, she told Cosmo. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

7 Tips for Coping With Job Loss

7 Tips for Coping With Job Loss7 Tips for Coping With Job LossEven the most loyal and competent employees can face the dreaded pink slip. And moving on can take time, motivation and support. Here are seven tips for coping with job loss.Going through a layoff or other job loss is never a pleasant experience. Stress, confusion and even depression can result. Your confidence can drop, and your motivation to move on may be temporarily zapped. But keep things in perspective. Losing your job is a setback, to be sure, but there are proven strategies to make it through this tough transition. Coping with job loss can be much less difficult when you have a plan to bounce back1. Let yourself feel the job lossTheres no need to fight those feelings of defeat and disappointment youll likely have immediately after losing your job. Its much like a grieving period Dont repress these thoughts only to have them resurface later. Thats not to say you should dwell on them, but everyone needs a little time to heal.2. Surround yourself with the right peopleYou may need some moments of solitude while coping with job loss, but dont isolate yourself. Friends and family can make a big difference. Being around supportive, positive people can help keep you hopeful and focused while you look for your next job.SUBMIT YOUR RESUME3. Re-evaluate your optionsThe fact is that you have more experience in your field than you did when you applied for your previous job, so update your resume and consider applying for positions that might not have been a fit before. You also have a weg to step back and look at the bigger picture. Were you truly happy in your previous job? Or can you visualize yourself changing careers and doing something different? Think about where your interests lie and how your life experience, work background and education can serve those passions.4. Catch up on career developmentIf you do want to continue in the same field, maybe its time to consider that certification youve thoug ht about getting, or to dive into some continuing education. Many industries, such as accounting, require ongoing professional development, so why not meet those requirements while you have the time?5. Keep in shapeIt would be easy to slip into a sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary choices because of stress or boredom while coping with job loss. But studies show that exercise can improve both your physical and emotional health. Exercise releases endorphins that trigger positive feelings, something that can fuel the drive and motivation youll need during your job hunt. A simple 30-minute walk in the fresh air goes a long way.6. VolunteerSpending all of your newfound free time focused solely on finding a new job can be draining. Worse yet is when you find yourself sitting at home worrying or just staring at the TV. Think about a cause you genuinely care about, and then seek out volunteer opportunities around that. Volunteering gets you up and out, serves as a source of social and int ellectual stimulation, and distracts you from the worries of unemployment. If you can find a volunteer role that uses your professional skills, it makes a nice addition to your resume. Remember, too, that volunteering can sometimes open the door to a paid position.7. Call on the professionalsConnect with a professional staffing agency that specializes in your field to learn about opportunities in your industry. A skilled recruiter can uncover job leads you wouldnt know about otherwise, all while you look for a new job, too. That can double your search power while relieving some of the anxiety of unemployment. In addition, a staffing agency such as Robert Half can help you line up temporary work. That can ease the financial strain, and you will likely learn new skills and gain valuable experience along the way.All of these ideas cost little or no money and could pay off with a renewed outlook and a better position than the one you lost. Keep your chin up and your eyes open. Coping wit h job loss is difficult, but you never know whats around the corner - it could be the job of your dreams. Tags

Guidelines for Interviewing Short-Listed Leprechauns

Guidelines for Interviewing Short-Listed Leprechauns To mark St. Patricks Day (here in London), of course I have to write something about leprechauns. But to keep it relevant to jobs and hiring, it seems appropriate to explore a central leprechaun recruitment issue How to handle a leprechaun youve short-listed for a job. That special interviewing and vetting techniques are likely to be required should come as no big surprise after all, leprechauns are wily and mischievous, with a legendary agenda of their own, but with potential for big payoffs for the right employer willing to bet on riches at the end of the rainbow. Here are some general useful guidelinesTen Leprechaummandments, if you willto ensure your effectiveness and safety while interviewing a leprechaun1. Never preface a question with I would like to know. That may be interpreted by the leprechaun as one of your three wishes, in the event the candidate is or becomes a captive, and therefore forced to fulfill your wish-trifecta.2. In general, their work experience is limited to making shoesin some instances only one shoe of a pair (or so it is said of them). Accordingly, short-listing should, where possible, be for positions with great skill transfer potential. Among the careers and jobs fruchtwein suitable for a shoe-making leprechaun areDictator mentor Joseph Stalin and Mussolinis fathers started out as shoemakers (Mussolinis father having been a blacksmith, which means, among other things, making shoes for horses).Nike executive (mentor) Having mastered the ins and outs, so to speak, of shoe making, a Leprechaun will have a leg or shoe up on the competition and be well-qualified to mentor iron-fisted corporate leaders.GREEN-COLLAR LEPRECHAUNS, CHRIS AND TOBY, TRAFALGAR SQUARE, LONDON, ST. PATRICKS DAY 2013 (Photo Michael Moffa)Boot and policy maker for jack-booted dictators who havent used up their three wishes. Not e that in terms of satisfying ambitions of global dominance and undisputed rule over the masses, either advisory role may be suitable for a short-listed leprechaun.3. If you ask whether an Irish brogue has been a career asset, expect an answer about a 1. a coarse shoe of untanned leather, formerly worn in Ireland and Scotland 2. a mans heavy oxford shoe, usually with decorative perforations and a wing tip. Thats assuming that the leprechaun can understand your non-Irish accent.4. If, because of the other kind of Irish brogue, you dont understand anything the leprechaun is saying, never ask him to repeat ityour request may be interpreted and wasted as one of your three wishes (if you have three coming to you).5. Never tell a leprechaun hes been short-listed. Not only is he likely to take offensehe may also sue you and your company for discrimination if hes notlage hired.6. Dont be surprised if the leprechaun is decked out entirely in green (or, much less commonly these days, red, dep ending on his lineage). Moreover, dont expect the leprechaun to ever wear anything else on the job. Although shoe making has only a limited skill-transfer potential in a segue to hospital employment, the leprechauns insistence on wearing green may require taking a close look at a hospital career, even if not in the hospital OR. Alternatively, a position with Greenpeace or some other environmental protection group could be given close consideration.7. Dont hesitate to offer so-called dollar-a-year jobs that provide a token honorarium to select leprechaun professionals who, in effect, are volunteering their services. Presumably, the leprechaun will have lots of gold stashed somewhere, even if not at the end of a rainbow (which is obviously blarney designed to deflect would-be thieves from the real cash cache).POSSIBLE LEPRECHAUN SIGHTING, DUBLIN 2013 (Photo Michael Moffa)8. If you are not sure whether the candidate (who may resemble Chris, Toby or the figure shown in the London and Du blin photos) is a leprechaun, you might consider dangling a compensation package with payment in gold rather than dollars as a litmus test. Being hardcore gold bugs, a leprechaun will pounce on that offer. The problem with that is, in light of virtually limitless quantitative easing and an exploding supply of Fed-issued fiat U.S. dollars and risk of hyperinflation, almost every savvy job applicant will (or should) respond the same way and go for the gold.9. If you are considering a leprechaun for a position with respect to which he is inexperienced, dont say that the company is willing to take on a green recruit. That will either confuse him or land you in court (again, for discrimination, however veiled).10. If the leprechaun is not suitable for any current opening, consider holding him captive and extracting three wishes. To maintain an appearance of perfect professionalism, you should carefully consider making the first wish one consistent with your industry code of ethics and exp ectations, say, I wish there were a job I could offer you, which will raise no eyebrows or suspicions, .since you say that every day.

5 ways to establish a strong leadership brand

5 ways to establish a strong leadership brand5 ways to establish a strong leadership brandA brand is that indistinguishable factor that sets something apart from the rest. Marketers try to develop a brand that sticks and engages people to take action in many cases that means to make a purchase. The truth is that as much as people spend time establishing a brand, it is others that actually brand you. Social media makes it easy to label and brand things by building consensus.Brand does not merely apply to commodities such as soda and automobiles. It applies to services, people, and leadership. Chances are you are not aware of your leadership brand. Rest assured, others are. They know who is capable and who is not. Sometimes your brand is so strong it is a stereotype - The CEO Suck Up, The Overachiever, The Ghost of Christmas Past, The Frantic Fanatic, The Office Gossip, Miss Self Important, The Chatterbox, The Micro Manager.Growing your self-awareness is the first tenet of building a solid leadership brand.Create a five-column matrix and fill in the blanks with responses to thefollowing points. When we have the humility to mindfully accept the truth of our situationon paper, it gives us a tangible and actionable plan to execute and track.1. Your ansaugen List three things you want to be known forIf you arent sure, imagine you were giving your retirement speech. Looking back, what would you comment on as your most fulfilling accomplishments?2. Your perception What do you suppose your colleagues would say about you now? Be honestAsk yourself this What would be said about you at your funeral by 1) a friend 2) a family member and 3) a work colleague? What would those who dont care for you say?3. Your reality Ask five people you work closely with how they would describe you at workSend an email to five unbiased people with whom you have worked over the last year. Tell them you are working on your leadership development and want to know how they would describe your 1 ) strongest traitsand 2) areas of opportunity. Assure them you are not proud and see this as an opportunity to build your self-awareness. Accept that your perception may not be othersreality.4. Your opportunity What key area of opportunity do you want to address? Is there a theme to the feedback you have received from others? When we address a target area for improvement it helps to 1) Identify what triggers it, 2) deploy a calming technique in the moment such as a deep breath and 3) have a go-to strategy such as asking for clarification or more time to get back to them.5. Your It Factor What is your signature strength? What is the impact of that strength?Put context around this. Define it succinctly so that you may speak to it in meetings, in strategy sessions, and on resumes. If your signature strength is good listening and problem solver you might say, After having listened to all points of view I suggest that we do (X) and evaluate its efficacy by (Y).

When work is a pleasure, life is a joy!

When work is a pleasure, life is a joyWhen work is a pleasure, life is a joyWe recently came back from the first Retreat in charming VeniceSome people dread the image of a whole weekend sleepover with their colleagues, usually filled with cheesy kollektivbuilding activities. But for me, it means a weekend full of fun and new memories with EnhancersDo you want to come and see me in Venice?, said ur Chief Innovator Mitko after we came back from the Power Week. He has been living there because of a university project and thought it could be fun if the whole team came for a visit. Thanks to our adventurous souls, the decision welches easy to make and Yes welches the only answer. We are better togetherI couldnt wait to go to our Venice Retreat. As some of us work remotely, gathering together is always a blast. With the distance and focus on work, I often forget about Vessys sarcastic sense of humor influenced by Dublin, for example. We also planned to sum up our learnings, takeaways, and amazing memories from the past year which I personally enjoyed the most.A company of friends. Ive always dreamt of working in a company that states that about themselves. And it turned out that this description represents . ?? The trust, support when I need it and the freedom of developing my top skills from the very beginning. Oh, I also felt it on the plane to Venice. Im scared of flying, you see, and I will never forget how the others tried to comfort me throughout the flight. Cheers for that ??Believe it or not, some of our team members met in Venice for the very first time Yet they acted like theyve known each other forever. Good job, Georgi, for recruiting such a superb crowd.Related speciesiclesChief Joy Officer A secret weapon of a successful businessBreakfast the most important meal of the weekVing Tsun the martial art thats improving our teams productivityWhy a retreat?2016 has been a pretty successful year for . One of the most positive things is that our team has grow n from 6 to 20 within 2016. It made our office a bit tight which led to choosing a new one. There were many other highs and lows, and we felt it was important to share them with each other. All the newbies, including me, could hear the history and all the old dogs could remind themselves of what brought to where it is now.The first nightWe arrived in our cozy hostel Generator in Venice on a cold Friday evening. We got into our bunkrooms which brought some good memories from high-school to my head. The night talks about our childhood boyfriends/girlfriends. Or a bottle of wine party where instead of a glass, each of us had their own bottle of wine to drink from. Just to be clear, this didnt end too well for some of us. (Psst, you know who Im talking about.) ??But lets get back to Friday evening. We gathered in the lounge area with the other Enhancers. After we had our short talks, hugs and glad to see you moments, we were ready to start throwing our 2016 wins on the wall with sticky notes.Id like to mention some of the things I think make all of us Most Proud Of working at . Firstly, the release of Marissa Mayers resume in geschftliches miteinander Insider which brought 10K+ new users to our platform. The process of helping others changing their careers began. So far 200K+ people have created a resume on our platform to get the job they best fit in. Read our latest story here Sam from Spotify. We managed to save the company and most importantly the team after running out of investment funds, then secured a new one from 3 great investors. Soon after that, reached the break-even point. This year we started building a true work-life harmony in our team. We travel together, spend time together outside of work, eat breakfast on Mondays, train Ving Tsun twice a week and so on.From this meeting I realized that before I joined , there were some tough moments. What I know for sure by now, is that our Top Strengths are turning a difficult situation into an opportunity an d sticking together no matter what.To celebrate, we went out in the quiet streets of Venice and made some noise. Nothing inappropriate, I think It was quite difficult to find a club which would fit all 18 of us in. We stopped at a place where they played salsa music and the night began I love a bit of salsita and I was surprised some of the others are actually pretty amazing at it Even the Colombian waiter said we dance like pros. Many tequilas, laughs and dances inspired by our Ving Tsun classes to a Kung Fu Fighting song, they let us play our own songs from YouTube. Imagine the mood after that It turned into a private party. We left after the barman disconnected my phone from the speaker, at about 2 amThe Saturday adventureThe next day after our night out, we did some wandering around the streets of Venice together to clear our heads and explore its beautiful history and architecture. People say Venice is only for couples who are deeply in love. But I had a completely different fe eling surrounded by people I love working with. Thanks to a detailed plan of our operations star Deni, each of us could decide what to do. Most of us (mainly the ones who could bear the hangover) stuck together at the end. We passed by Piazza San Marco, Saint Marks Basilica and San Marco Campanile. Since our Chief Innovator Mitko loves history, he happily took on the role of our private guide. The weather was cold and our energy level high. We walked with smiles on our faces ready to use selfie sticks at each corner. In the afternoon, we were on our way to a conference room. Each team presented their Q1 focus and the plan. As weve heard from quite a few customers how we helped them find a job, I prepared a surprise for everyone. A Skype call with Sam, who I spoke with and wrote about on our blog. She found a job at Spotify and was super excited to talk to the whole team and give her feedback. I think it went pretty well. ??A Sunday well spent brings a week of content.Enhancers took it slow on Sunday and dedicated the entire day to a trip visiting the island Burano, famous for its colorful houses. I loved it there, it felt like a fairytale. Our Arts Director Kaloian didnt like it so much as he prefers simplicity ?? We took loads of pictures and had delicious coffee in the cutest cafe.My very first retreat with made me excited for the future. I look forward to new memories, retreats, Power Weeks and hard work it will bring. And to making you a part of it, of courseBack to youHave you tried traveling with your team for a company retreat? How do you find the motivation to go to work and stay positive? If you're struggling with these questions, you might find that opinions around you fall into one of two camps. Some people think you should just cut ties and sail into the sunset in search of bigger and better things. Others cannot understand why you're restless and uneasy in the first place; after all, nothing is drastically wrong. Some days, you are perfectly content at work. Other days, you could scream in frustration. What should you do? This paradox defines much of our personal and professional lives. Today, we have more options than ever before. That's great, except when the possibility of something better sabotages and distracts you from building relationships and experiences where you are. It's so easy to get overly focused on annoying little things and miss the big picture! Here are five signs that your current job is a great catch and worth a little extra effort. #1: The job delivers what matters most to you Sure, your job might come with its own annoying factors: an overly-talkative office neighbor, a difficult client, or a tight set of sales goals. However, if it also has financial and non-financial benefits that are important to you, walking away may be a mistake. In order to see the benefits of your current position clearly, you must first be clear on your priorities. Try writing out a list of the factors that matter most to you (salary, specific benefits, length of your commute, growth potential, etc.) just as you would if you were considering a new job. If your current position meets your needs, an upgrade may be nice but not urgent. #2: Job expectations are clear and you have the tools and resources to do what's needed Lack of clarity on job expectations is one of the top red flags to be on alert for when you're considering a new opportunity. If your current position has a well-defined set of performance criteria and you have the tools and resources to do your best every day, you may actually be better off than you think. #3: Someone at work cares deeply about your success as a person and a professional This may be your boss, a mentor, a co-worker, or a best friend. If you have the benefit of a reliable sounding board and a trusted ear when it comes to work dilemmas, professional growth, and personal satisfaction, you have a valuable perk. Finding another job is not nearly as hard as making deep human connections when you get there. #4: You have opportunities to learn and grow Every job has its own degree of boring and repetitive tasks that have to get done. However, if your position gives you an opportunity to learn new things and take on new challenges, you may be less stuck than you think you are. Keep in mind that sometimes, finding new opportunities may require proactive efforts. That might mean volunteering to lead a project, offering ideas for a pilot program, or asking to attend a conference or a client meeting. Seek out new chances to learn and grow, and take advantage of the ones in front of you that will help you stay positive and motivated at work. Related:Skills You Can Learn on the Job #5: You receive recognition and regular feedback on your performance Acknowledgment of a job well done can do wonders for your motivation and commitment. Beyond praise and financial bonuses, regular feedback conversations can provide you with a chance to reflect on things you could do better. If you're getting that already great! If you would like more feedback, consider asking for it. Wondering how to love your job again? If you have discovered that rekindling the passion and the sparkle in your job is a worthwhile investment, here are five ways to do that. 1. Take a break Sometimes, you need to walk away from a project or a task to realize that you miss it. Taking a break from work might look like a month-long vacation to an exotic island, but it does not have to be that to be drastic. Consider setting boundaries that will allow you to not work when you are off, whether by staying out of your work inbox between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., not taking any work home, or by not working on weekends. As a Type A super-driven professional, I have had trouble with this in the past myself until a psychologist next door recommended thinking of my work responsibilities as a sweater. Just as you can leave a sweater on your chair at work, so too you can leave your assignments and deadlines behind the closed office door. By creating a clear boundary and allowing yourself to focus on family, friends, hobbies, and rest when you're home, you will find yourself to be more creative and productive when at work. 2. Look for more of what you love It takes very little effort to find things to complain about. Bad coffee, aggressive air conditioning, difficult clients, tight budgets reasons to moan and sulk are plentiful. Instead of focusing on what's uncomfortable and annoying, choose to stay positive at work by looking for more of what you love. You might look forward to the opportunity to walk outside at lunchtime, a chat with an inspiring colleague, or a chance to contribute to a new project. That doesn't mean that you should color everything in rainbow colors and fake it. Instead, simply take the time to notice and acknowledge the many ways your professional life goes right. If you want more inspiration around this idea, look into the 21 day no-complaint experiment. 3. If an entrepreneurial path is calling your name, start your business without leaving your job Many professionals dream wistfully of a way they can monetize their talents by launching their own business. If you're one of those people, why wait? You can start your business right now! By taking the time to develop your idea on evenings and weekends, you can test drive the creative and exciting path of business ownership without leaving the security net of your current job. Having an outlet outside of work can do wonders for staying positive and motivated in the office. 4. Look for people who are excited and engaged Mood and attitude are terribly contagious. If you have decided to fall back in love with your job, you may have to actively seek out co-workers who are engaged, enthusiastic, and positive. Try making friends with interns and new staff their bright-eyed excitement can offer a great boost to your day. 5. Make small changes Change does not have to be overwhelming. By making tiny tweaks, you can introduce enough fresh elements to your job to make it feel like a whole new gig within six months. Whether you have your sights on a promotion, a cross-functional leadership role, or better work-life balance, start by taking the smallest viable step in the right direction. In closing, remember to be patient with yourself and your professional situation. Even the best jobs have boring or tough days, but that does not necessarily mean that you have settled for less than what you deserve. Bad attitude and poorly considered moves can hurt your career. Don't sabotage yourself by burning bridges or compromising your professional credibility. However, do take notice when bad days turn into bad weeks and bad months and know that it is time to leave the job. Even if you decide to leave, remember that a positive outlook and a focus on what's right is more attractive than a stream of negative comments. That will allow you to search for a new opportunity with grace and retain the goodwill of your colleagues and superiors valuable currency no matter what choose to do next. 7 night-time rituals that will make you happy and more productive

7 night-time rituals that will make you happy and more productive 7 night-time rituals that will make you happy and more productive Everybody talks about morning rituals to get the day started right. (Even I have.) But  ending  the day right can be even more important. Why?Because your mind  ain’t perfect when it comes to happiness. It  cheats.Daniel Kahneman, Nobel Prize winner and author of  Thinking, Fast and Slow, has shown that your brain really  remembers only two things about an event: The emotional peak The end Via  The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less:Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman and his colleagues have shown that what we remember about the pleasurable quality of our past experiences is almost entirely determined by two things: how the experiences felt when they were at their peak (best or worst), and how they felt when they ended. This “peak-end” rule of Kahneman’s is what we use to summarize the experience, and then we rely on that summary later to remind ourselves of how the experience felt.If your brain is gonna cheat, you should  cheat back. Let’s game the system. If you structure your days  so that the peak is awesome  and the ending is awesome  you’ll fool your imperfect noggin into a happier life.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! How? I am so very happy you asked. Let’s get to it…1) Have a “Shutdown Ritual”Workday is over. But your m ind is still going and going and going. You gotta get your brain out of “work mode” to relax.A simple ritual can help. Have a consistent little routine that let’s your overactive brain know “we’re done.”From  Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World:…support your commitment to shutting down with a strict shutdown ritual that you use at the end of the workday to maximize the probability that you succeed. In more detail, this ritual should ensure that every incomplete task, goal, or project has been reviewed and that for each you have confirmed that either (1) you have a plan you trust for its completion, or (2) it’s captured in a place where it will be revisited when the time is right.Bestselling author  Dan Pink  gives similar advice:Establish a closing ritual.  Know when to stop working. Try to end each work day the same way, too. Straighten up your desk. Back up your computer. Make a list of what you need to do tomorrow.Research shows writing down what you need to do the next day  relieves anxiety and helps you enjoy your evening.(To learn the six things the most productive people do every day, click  here.)Now you’re out of “work mode.” You want to get happy, right?  Wouldn’t it be great if every day was a Saturday? Impossible?Wrong, dear reader…2) Turn Weeknights Into WeekendsFirst let’s ask: why are weekends so great?  Research  says the  big reason is more time with friends and family:A large portion of the weekend effects is explained by differences in the amount of time spent with friends or family between weekends and weekdays (7.1 vs. 5.4 hours). The extra daily social time of 1.7 hours in weekends raises average happiness by about 2%.So don’t just sit on the couch by yourself when you get home. Spend 2 hours with friends or family and you just turned a dull Tuesday night into a happy Saturday.(To learn how to make your weekends more awesome, click  here.)Okay, you can’t go out and see friends every w eeknight. What else makes evenings more enjoyable?3) Mastery, Not TVResearch  shows that “mastery experiences” are also key to helping people recover from the workweek. So what’s that mean?  Doing stuff you’re good at and trying to get better.Actively engage in a hobby,  don’t passively  sit on the couch. Most of us seek unscheduled free time for our leisure but given your brain’s lazy nature, research says  you’re likely to waste that time doing what’s easy vs what’s really fun.Via  Rapt: Attention and the Focused Life:Summing up, Csíkszentmihlyi says, “If left to their own devices and genetic programming, and without a salient external stimulus to attract them, most people go into a mode of low-level information processing in which they worry about things or watch television.” The antidote to leisure-time ennui is to pay as much attention to scheduling a productive evening or weekend as you do to your workday.(To learn what Harvard research says is the secret to being happier and more successful, click  here.)Okay, you’re actively engaging in a hobby.  But your brain does not have an easy “off” switch. If you want a good night’s snooze  you need a ritual that  helps you wind down and lets your mind know it’s sleepy time…4) Wind Down, Don’t CollapseDim the lights and turn off all screens at least an hour before bed.You wouldn’t walk around in bright daylight before trying to sleep for eight hours, would you? Well, when you stare at screens late at night, that’s pretty much what you’re doing. When I talked to  Richard Wiseman,  professor of psychology at the University of  Hertfordshire and bestselling author of  Night School: Wake up to the power of sleep,  he said:Ten minutes of a smartphone in front of your nose is about the equivalent of an hour long walk in bright daylight.  Imagine going for an hour long walk in bright daylight and then thinking, “Now I’ll get some sleep.” It ain’t going to happen.(For more on how to get an amazing night’s sleep, click  here.)So no screens. And if you want to maintain a happy relationship, what should you  never  do before bedtime?5) Don’t  Go To Bed Angry With Your PartnerKarl Pillemer  of Cornell University interviewed nearly 1500 people age 70 to 100+ for his book “30 Lessons for Living: Tried and True Advice from the Wisest Americans.”  What did they recommend most often for a happy relationship?Via  30 Lessons for Living: Tried and True Advice from the Wisest Americans:…if there was one ubiquitous recommendation about marriage it was this: “Don’t go to bed angry.”Why might this be so powerful?Via  30 Lessons for Living: Tried and True Advice from the Wisest Americans:…most things that couples disagree upon aren’t worth more than a day’s combat… The joy that many of the experts express on waking in the morning next to a partner of decades is the flip side of this insight. Each additional day together is a  gift. The end of t he day means the end of hostilities, the recognition that the underlying shared values and commitment to the relationship trump the need for one last dig or self-righteous justification. Not going to bed angry doesn’t mean “stay up and fight.” Just let it go. Kiss and make up.(To learn the four most common relationship problems - and how to fix them, click  here.)And it’s probably no surprise that the single most proven method for increasing happiness is something best done before bed. Here it is…6) Write Down The Good Stuff That HappenedI’ve mentioned this a bunch in the past. But if you’re still not doing it, you need to start.  This is all you have to do: Put a notepad and pen by the bed. Before you go to sleep each night, write down three things that happened that day which you’re thankful for. Then write a sentence about why each happened. This technique has been proven  again  and  again  and  again. Here it is, explained by its originator, University of Pennsylvania professor Martin Seligman.Via  Flourish: A Visionary New Understanding of Happiness and Well-being:Every night for the next week, set aside ten minutes before you go to sleep. Write down three things that went well today and why they went well…Writing about why the positive events in your life happened may seem awkward at first, but please stick with it for one week. It will get easier. The odds are that you will be less depressed, happier, and addicted to this exercise six months from now.Research  shows the  more you think about happy things the happier you’ll be. Simple but true. So reminders are powerful.(To learn how to make your life better by sending 5 simple emails, click  here.)Now your brain may cheat when it comes to happiness but it can also be your best ally. Sometimes dreams are far better than reality. How can you use that to your advan tage?7) Schedule  Something To Look Forward ToStudies show anticipation can actually be  more  enjoyable  than getting the thing you’re anticipating. From  The Myths of Happiness: What Should Make You Happy, but Doesn’t, What Shouldn’t Make You Happy, but Does:…researchers who studied a thousand Dutch vacationers concluded that by far the greatest amount of happiness extracted from the vacation is derived from the anticipation period…People who devote time to anticipating fun experiences are happier. From Shawn Achor’s  The Happiness Advantage:One study found that people who just thought about watching their favorite movie actually raised their endorphin levels by 27 percent. Often, the most enjoyable part of an activity is the anticipation. If you can’t take the time for a vacation right now, or even a night out with friends, put something on the calendar- even if it’s a month or a year down the road. Then whenever you need a boost of happiness, remind yourself about it.Schedule a meal with a friend or designate a time the next day to indulge yourself with something simple that you love to do. Then be excited about it. That’s all it takes.(To learn the four rituals neuroscience says will make you happier, click  here.)Okay, let’s round all this up and learn  the easiest way to get started…Sum UpHere’s your new evening ritual for happiness: Have a “shutdown ritual.”  Write down worries and make a plan for tomorrow. Work is over. Turn weeknights into weekends.  Weekends are happier because of time with friends. So see friends. Not hard. Mastery, not TV.  Hobbies make you happier. Spend nights getting awesome at something. Wind down, don’t collapse.  No screens. No coffee. No skydiving. Never go to bed angry with your partner.  Kiss and make up. And kiss. And kiss some more. Write down the good stuff that happened.  Force your brain to think about the good and life will be good. Schedule something to look forward to.  Anticipation is like 401K matching for happiness. Double the  happies. Your brain cheats. Cheat back.  Plan a good thing for tomorrow to have an emotional high point, end the day right and you can trick your mind into  happiness. And don’t wait. Right now, send this to a friend and plan something fun for tomorrow. That way you’re half done.As the saying goes, “All’s well that ends well.” So end the day well, my friend.Join more than 300,000 readers.  Get a free weekly update via email  here. 22 Job Search Motivation Strategies from FlexJobs Readers 22 Job Search Motivation Strategies from Readers Staying motivated through a job search can be challenging. When you start looking for a job, you can often feel very optimistic about the ease with which you will find your next job, but even the best job search can have moments of frustration or confusion. Prepare for those discouraging moments with these great job search motivation strategies from our readers. We recently ran a contest where we asked readers to tell us what motivates them to keep up with their job search, and 40 people responded with excellent advice. For a chance to win a free membership, enter our latest contest here! Here are 22 job search motivation strategies our readers use to stay positive and motivated: 1. Set a job search alarm. Deb says, “I set an alarm on my tablet for the same time every day indicating this is my hour or two that I need to search for employment. I make a point that I can’t get up from my computer until I have applied for at least 2-3 positions. Afterward, I treat myself to something like a walk in the park, baking cookies, reading a chapter from a book, taking a nap, etc.” 2. Use Saved Search functions. Libby says, “I have a lot of saved searches on my favorite sites, so I’m able to scan through pretty quickly. I found myself burning out quickly when I was reading every posting in detail, so now I scan quickly and only open those that catch my eye. (Hey- recruiters are scanning our resumes just as quickly, right?!)” 3. Try Meetup.com for networking. Leigh says, “I looked on meetup.com for a job seekers networking group in my area. I had to go to more than one to find one that was a good fit, but when it did it was a surge of positive energy that gave me renewed motivation.” 4. Set goals and look forward to obstacles. Diana P. says, “Finding the RIGHT job is not an easy task. It takes patience, perseverance and lot of self-confidence and faith that sooner or later you will succeed. What motivates me? As a genuine Sagittarius, I always set goals, and I do not give up until I achieve them no matter of the obstacles and namely obstacles make us stronger and more sophisticated. So, no matter what, keep smiling and keep walking.” 5. Find one yes. Meema says, “I tell myself I only need ONE yes. This helps me go through the NO’s, keeping in mind that I am getting closer to that YES.” 6. Think about getting back to work. Enushi says, “Your determination to get back to workkeeps you motivated all the time.” 7. Identify your motivation. Helen says, “It’s amazing just how motivated I am in my search, and it’s a pity that employers can’t run their companies based on my needs! Your motivation is there, you just have to identify what it is, and the world will then revolve around it.” 8. Make time for hobbies. Mary says, “I stay motivated during my job search by making sure I schedule a time to do something I enjoy, whether it’s working on one of my hobbies or just spending some time curled up with hot tea and a good book!” 9. Do things you like. Christine says, “I have a few things that I do: 1. Walk and play with my dog 2. Go outside 3. Stop and take care of anything else: read, clean, laundry, etc.” 10. Dont isolate yourself. Charlotte says, “1- Exercise several days a week. 2- Take breaks and go outside to clear your head when you feel less productive. 3- Don’t stay isolated all day long. Work from a café if necessary to stay connected.” 11. Keep going. Rob says, “Never give up.” 12. Maintain your positivity. Lisa says, “I keep a positive attitude and continue looking every day. I give a 100% in every job that comes along, and that keeps me going knowing that I am worth their time. My attitude is if they don’t hire me, that is their loss, not mine. Never give up because good things come to those who wait.” 13. Stay organized. Violeta says, “Strive to start from an optimistic mindset. Research not only job opportunities but also inspirational stories. Enroll in online courses to improve skills. Keep the applications organized using Excel or Trello.” 14. Know what boosts your well-being. Jamshid V. says, “Finding a job is a job in itself, so the better I get at job search, the luckier I get. What motivates me: I am always after that perfect job or at least a role that ticks off the points for my ideal role. If I am low on motivation, I get a scrap of paper and write down why I need to be fired up for job search. Bills, family well-being, gym membership (my well-being) and many more. After writing this list down and seeing it every day gives me the motivation to do more job search. Networking with folks in the industry and building a rapport has become a hobby of mine. The more rapport I have with them the closer I am to getting an interview or secure a role. Now that’s another motivation! In my spare time, I read books that are good for my mind and read less of newspapers. I recommend reading Get The Job You Really Want by James Caan. After reading this book that not only motivated me but made me think outside the box on whil e doing a job search and writing applications. My motto is ‘it is not over until’ So folks keep your persistence strong.” 15. Focus on the best jobs for YOU. Recheal says, “Find one or two job ads that seem perfect for you, by evening, and work on them, first thing in the morning. Each application you send will bring you a great sense of accomplishment. Take time to celebrate this victory, you will get new motivation each day to search for another (job) opportunity to create another moment of victory.” 16. Play it as a numbers game. Emily I. says, “The only way that I can do a sustained job search is to completely separate myself out from the process. I was an independent consultant for a lot of years so job searching or, in this case, assignment hunting was a pretty constant activity. To start out, I consider it a complete numbers game. I create one great resume and one great cover letter and have been known to send out hundreds of these in a week. I do not think about whether or not I want the particular job, which is for after the interview, and I have found that it is impossible to understand a job before that. I never schedule more than two interviews in a day. I once tried three and just couldn’t handle it. After the interview, I don’t think about it all. It has absolutely no impact on how many emails I send out the next day. In other words, I treat it like a somewhat boring job and do not allow myself to become emotionally involved, by either being happy or rejected. I t may not work for everyone, but by following these general rules I had virtually no downtime as a consultant.” 17. Job search outside of your house. Jasmin says, “To keep motivated I like to change up my work (job search) environment. I find I get a lot less distracted by things like laundry or eating etc. when I make plans to do my work at say Starbucks or the library. It gives more structure to the time and place when I need to be focused on looking for work and, of course, the additional treat of a coffee helps with motivation too!” 18. Let your hobbies help your job search. Hayley says, “To stay positive while job searching, I have been turning to one of my hobbies: writing. I’ve always wanted to write children’s stories, so I am taking a course, and already have my first chapter and working title completed! It got me thinking…so I also started writing a self-help book on staying positive while job searching! In writing this (more for myself, at the moment), it keeps my head in “good space” and has allowed to branch out even further in my writing! It is so easy to become depressed and complacent. This helps me keep up my energy, time management, and it helps hone my skills of proofreading and editing! Hopefully, soon, it will be working in my writing around my new work from the home schedule!” 19. Wake up with a mantra. Carrie says, “When I wake up I immediately tell myself that I will get the job that works for me, my lifestyle, and my financial well-being. I created my office space and had put it out in the universe, ask, and you shall receive. You have to stay positive, be positive, and think positive and positive things will come. I take breaks throughout the day and on those breaks, I get re-energized and get back to the computer by thinking that the next application will be the one. I do NOT get discouraged.” 20. Eat an energy-boosting diet. Leslie says, Keep a regular work schedule of job search activity like it’s a full-time job. Celebrate the small wins during the day. Focus on the positive. Get up to exercise during the day, even small chunks of time, whether a walk outside or jumping on the rebounder (mini-trampoline). Eat foods that boost energy and mood. Consider how many people in the world are in much less fortunate situations, and count my blessings. 21. Be grateful for what you already have. Sara says, “I wake up each morning and look at my beautiful two children. I am looking for the perfect job that will let me find fulfillment in my career while still being an active participant in the lives of my boys. They are my motivation! I want to be around while they are still little, and that is what I am fighting for every time I submit an application. Who says a women can’t have it all?” 22. Trade your skills for goods and services. Ann says, “Once I apply for two jobs, I give myself a break and do something fun â€" maybe go for a walk, make dinner from scratch (that doesn’t happen when I’m working FT), or make a lunch date with a friend. I have also stepped up my volunteer time. Since I’m not working right now, this gives me that sense of community I miss from working with a team. It also serves as a great networking outlet. I have also learned that I can trade my skills for something I want â€" for example since I’m unemployed; I was going to give up my gym membership. The gym owner made a trade with me â€" I’ll update his website and do some other marketing he needs, and I get a free membership for a few months. This is actually helping me improve my skills and keep them fresh while waiting for that next great job to come along.” We love hearing how people focus on the things they can control and keep an open mind and positive attitude. 3 people get real about leaving a job without having another offer

3 people get real about leaving a job without having another offer 3 people get real about leaving a job without having another offer Everyone has a unique career path that’s solely their own. But things don’t always happen as planned.Think about it: You were probably told to get a stable job so you could provide for yourself, and eventually, your family. You were probably told to be the best employee you could be and to keep picking up new skills along the way. But most importantly, you were probably told to always have a plan for your next career step.So what happens when you quit without having another job offer secured?Ladders spoke with several working Americans who’ve all found themselves in this place before, revealing the realities of taking this route. When this approach isn’t all it’s cracked up to beMeet Beth from Oregon. She told us that she currently works for a healthcare provider, but previously left a position about 20 years ago without having another one lined up. At the time, she felt “relieved” because her work circumstances were “uncomfortable,” but said that she’s actually not in a better place in her career now as a result. Why? Beth said that she accepted the first offer that came her way, and while her peers made progress, she was earning less than before due to a “significant pay cut.”Now, she says that she’s “behind,” especially in the retirement savings department.“When you quit without a plan, it feels like you have the power. But actually, it puts you in a vulnerable position when it comes to negotiating a new job, especially if your finances are in any way limited. I felt like I had to take the first job that was offered, even though it was a cut in pay. I ended up leaving after a year, wasting everyone’s time,” Beth told Ladders. She said she wishes she hadn’t done this, saying, .I should have taken accountability for improving my work life where I was, or spent more time in discernment before leaving.”But Beth also has words of wisdom for people who are thinking of jumping ship at work without another job offer: “Take a goo d look in the mirror, and ask yourself if you are truly doing your best to make the job you have work. If the answer is yes, then ask the following questions: 1. What type of work do you want to do? 2. What environment do you want to do it in? 3. Who do you want to be your boss? I have used those three questions to make several job moves and each one has been successful.”When this approach really puts the pressure onMeet Danny from New York.He told Ladders that he does “marketing for a technology company.” He also doled out a word to the wise: He’s “in a better place now a decade later, but I do feel a consistent sense that I must work hard and save as much as I can because everything can fall out from under me at any moment. The period without a job, on the plus side, gave me grit.”Clearly, things weren’t always easy for Danny along the way.He told Ladders that he arrived in New York City during the summer  of  2008, before he realized “that the entire financial inf rastructure of the country was about to collapse. I thought that giving myself a few months to look around for a job was the responsible thing to do but ultimately it took me over a year to find my footing.”Overall, he likes where his career is headed. But he has recognized the critical role the “series of internships, others may not have been financially secure enough to accept, that opened doors for me and created opportunities” have played in his career. He also acknowledged that people have vouched for him and given his career a leg up.Danny provided Ladders with a recommendation for people thinking of taking the same approach: “I would advise people leaving their job to line up some sort of side hustle or freelance work even if it’s not steady just to have something to do and to show for that period of time. Use your talents however possible and keep making connections with people who can help you accelerate your career.”When this approach turns out to be just what the doctor orderedMeet Donya from Florida. She told Ladders that right now, she’s a “freelance/consultant” and that although she’s not opposed “to working a permanent job,” she’s currently “enjoying the flexibility of being my own boss.”Donya was generally happy about how her career has turned out but was also very clear about the challenges of leaving a job without having another offer elsewhere.“I’m not naive. I know that not everyone is in the position to just walk away without another job,”  she told Ladders. “Still, I think it’s important to know what you are willing to sacrifice and where you’re willing to bend.”She also said that when she made the big career move, she felt “excited and powerful. I’ve always had a net before leaping, so I was excited about embarking on a new adventure. There’s power in taking control.”Although Donya said she’s currently “in a new chapter” in life, which she calls “similar, but different,” she re mains optimistic about what’s to come. When asked if she’s now in a better place career-wise because of her decision, she expressed that leaving a job without another is truly more complicated than meets the eye.“Financially, not yet. It’s only been a few months. I made a six-figure salary, and I know it will take time to make that up. Fortunately, I have a husband that is very supportive,” she told Ladders. “Emotionally/mentally, yes. I know that if I would have stayed, I’d be miserable, and that misery would eventually take its toll outside the job and creep into my personal life.”But Donya also gave Ladders a crystal clear set of suggestions for others contemplating taking the same risk.“Take inventory; an honest look at the situation. As we evolve, we should improve; therefore, If you are better today than you were yesterday, then power through; if not, it’s time to move on and find a better climate. I should have done that as soon as I saw the warning signs, but I didn’t. I kept making excuses and doubting what I was seeing,” she said. “As time progressed, I reached my boiling point and had to jump at that moment. I literally was in the middle of a conversation with my boss and blurted out: ‘I’m leaving. My last day is next Friday.’ I would normally like to have some sort of plan. At least an eloquent statement prepared.”But still, given the chance, Donya said she would do the same thing all over again - just under the same conditions.Although she sometimes wonders what would’ve happened if she remained at her old job and made things work, or if she “let them win by bowing out,” she told Ladders, “then I remind myself that that’s pride and I get off my high horse. There’s something in attacking a challenge head-on, but there’s also something in knowing where you want to invest your energy. At the end of the day, I didn’t feel this particular challenge was worth the investment. Given the same circumstances, I’d do it again.”

Editing Short Stories Checklist

Editing Short Stories Checklist Editing Short Stories Checklist Fiction writing is the composition of non-factual prose text. Fiction writing is often produced as a story meant to entertain or convey an authors point of view. The result of this may be a short story, novel, novella, screenplay, or drama, among other forms of writing. As a non-fiction writer, you might  specialize in one of the many different fiction  genres such as science fiction, pop culture romance, or literary fiction in the vein of  the much revered Herman Melville. Although your skill set, as a fiction writer, is making use of your creative side, you still need to be aware of proper grammar. With this editing checklist, you will avoid the basic grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes that will otherwise mark you as an amateur. As a writer, you need to take your  editing skills as seriously as you take your job.   Before considering your work complete, make sure you have done the following. Spelling __ Spell check has been run. __ Its and its have been used correctly (its is a contraction for it is while its is possessive). __ All other homonyms (which spell check wont catch) have been checked. For example, you would  not want to write, She peaked through the blinds and saw the peek of Mt. Ampersand. Grammar __ Dialogue is punctuated correctly. __ Any run-ons or fragments are intentional, despite the fact that those are rare. __ Subjects and verbs agree in number, and verb tenses are consistent throughout. __ Commas have been used correctly. __ That and which have been used correctly. __ There are no unclear or confusing pronoun references. __ Sentence structure varies in descriptive or expository passages, which is helpful in keeping the  reader interested. __ The sentences are concise. __ Consideration has been given to word choice, which might necessitate  consulting a thesaurus. __ Basic facts have been checked, especially those that would be embarrassing if you got the facts wrong. In order to ramp up your writing technique, try reading Developing Your Writing Style, one of many useful books to choose on the topic. Also advantageous, especially for those in the early stages of their careers, is  English Made Simple and Diana Hackers Rules for Writers, which has online exercises. If youre a student, or simply like to go old-school, you can also check out your local library, brick and mortar bookstore, or college bookstore. Whichever book you purchase, be sure to find one with exercises and a key at the back. Many writers feel that grammar isnt important, that it even in some way inhibits their creativity. Even the famous Joan Didion said, I never actually learned the rules of grammar, relying instead only on what sounded right. But Didion is the exception to the rule. Youd never hear a baseball player say that they didnt understand the rules of the game. And in writing (unlike in the world of baseball) you will have plenty of opportunities in both your personal and your professional life to make use of finely-tuned editing skills.

A Handy-Dandy Guide to Email Etiquette

A Handy-Dandy Guide to Email Etiquette A Handy-Dandy Guide to Email Etiquette Ever hit “reply all” on an email you shouldn’t have? Or vice versa? How do you write a formal email without sounding like you have no personality, or altogether too much personality? And what the heck are you supposed to put in the subject line? Well, I’m not Emily Post- but in this guide to email etiquette, you can call me E-Post. (Get it?) We’re going to take a deep dive on the multitudinous aspects of “shooting off a quick email,” which is rarely as simple as it sounds. Re: Subject Lines HELLO That is a super-weird subject line, and will essentially guarantee that no one will open a cold email from you. Even if they do know you, it’s still weird. Do you greet people that way in real life? I sure hope not. The subject line of an email should be clear and concise. If you’re applying for a job, for example, “Associate Law Editor Position” is a perfectly acceptable subject line. If you’re forwarding preliminary research for a project, put “Site Design Research- Photos and Notes” so your recipient knows what they’re getting. Capitalize the subject line as you would a title- first, last, and important words. People receive lots of emails every day, and being able to scroll through their inbox and know approximately what each email contains is much more convenient than an oddly placed salutation or icebreaker. Salutations, Good Sir and/or Madam That sub-header right there is quite possibly the worst way to start an email. I sincerely hope that, when you’re reaching out to someone via email, you know the recipient’s name. If you’ve met them in person, address them how you normally do. I once met someone at a networking function and, when he emailed to follow up, he referred to me as “Dear Ms. Kaitlin McManus”- which was weird, since he had been calling me just “Kaitlin” at the event. If you haven’t met your contact, things can get trickier. I stick with either “Mr./Ms. Last Name” (Mrs. only if I know for certain that she’s married) or simply “First Name Last Name.” Then, when they respond, I check what they signed off as. If I call someone “Mr. Smith,” but he signs off as simply, “John,” I’ll call him John in my next email. Erring on the side of formality when you don’t know what to call someone is okay; simply adjust if you need to as your correspondence continues. Also, personally, I don’t put “dear” at the start of any email because this isn’t the 18th century. While admittedly most people don’t even register the address, to me, that invisibility makes it superfluous. Punctuation- the Building Blocks of Sounding Intelligent Punctuation affects the way in which we read a sentence- sentences with the same words but different punctuation can have vastly different meanings. (A classic example being the crucial distinction between “Let’s eat, Grandma,” and “Let’s eat Grandma.”) So it’s important to use punctuation correctly to strike your desired tone. F. Scott Fitzgerald said, “An exclamation point is like laughing at your own joke.” He’s not wrong. If I don’t know someone well, I tend to use a lot of exclamation points. In the moment, I think they make me sound friendlier. In retrospect, they make me sound slightly manic. Not the professional image I’m trying to cultivate. You should use exclamation points as often as you would laugh at your own jokes: Hardly ever. If you’re really trying to lay it on thick with the friendliness, I’d give you a max of two per email- and not on the same sentence!! (See? It’s too much.) Another thing to avoid are ellipses. (Otherwise known as a dot-dot-dot…) Ellipses give the impression that you don’t know how to finish your own thought- but this is an email. You have all the time in the world to finish your thought. This is professional correspondence, not a passive-aggressive Post-it left for your roommate: Stick to one period at a time. If you’re struggling with punctuating your emails on a nuts-and-bolts level, try downloading a grammar tool like Grammarly or ProWritingAid- they can catch some of the little nit-picky mistakes. This Is Me, Signing Off The way you end an email is as important as the way you start it. You want to leave your reader with a good impression: appreciative of their time and effort, but not overbearing or, on the flip-side, curt. When it comes to professional emails, I try to keep my sign-off semi-personal. “Sincerely” has the same effect on me as “dear” at the start- it’s a little old-fashioned, and a little invisible. It’ll do the job, but the job can be done better. I tend to go with “All the best,” or “Best”- perhaps “Thanks again,” if I’m asking for a favor (although usually I put that at the end of the email text itself). I’ve received and appreciated comments like, “Warmly,” “Many thanks,” and “Cheers,” if I’ve met the person before. Basically, your goal is to sound warm, kind, and professional rather than stiff. To Reply or To Reply All Oh, the drama that has been caused by using the reply-all function incorrectly. Not using it when you should causes almost as much trouble as using it when you shouldn’t- almost. If you find yourself on a group email chain, here’s my advice: decide whether you’re replying to just the sender or to everyone first. Before you even type the email. Configure your recipients before typing anything at all, because once you’ve made your point, it’s too easy to hit a button that says “reply” without looking for the “all.” One rather innocuous example of incorrect usage is the email introduction: If someone has introduced you to another person via email, reply all- it’s the only way to get the new person on the email chain. But if the other person reaches out first and they’re the latest sender, then simply reply- dropping the introducer off the chain as you and your new pal correspond. The introducer doesn’t need to see your entire email chain. Put yourself in the shoes of the other receivers. Would you want to receive your email? If not, just reply. CC vs. BCC vs. BC vs. BBC... CCing and/or BCCing someone on an email is the B-side to reply vs. reply all. When you’ve CCed someone on an email (short for “carbon copy”), the email goes to that person- and everyone else on the email chain knows it. This is a function you’d use if, say, you wanted to send an email to a client as well as her assistant, so they both have it. BCC (“blind carbon copy”) is when you add someone to an email, but the recipient doesn’t see them on the email chain. For example, if you emailed a tough client and BCCed your boss to loop her in, then your boss would receive the email but the recipient would simply see themselves and you on the email chain. Feeling paranoid yet? BCCing has its uses, but mostly you should be using CC in a work setting. For something that’s been around for essentially as long as I’ve been alive, email can be a sticky trap to fall into. Really, the rules of email etiquette are the same as most rules of etiquette: write the email you’d like to receive: Correctly addressed and spelled, warm but professional, and ideally brief. So long as you keep these rules in mind, you should be able to avoid most of the pitfalls email can present.
